WE DESIGN COMMUNITIES and CREATE CULTURE.
MIIM Designs’ Philosophy:
At MIIM Designs, we believe that every design decision that we make in the built environment comes at an expense, be it with and for the community, environmental or financial. Therefore we believe that every design has to make a significant contribution to its location, its context, the people it impacts everyday through use and its broader environment.
Rather than focus on typology, MIIM Designs’ portfolio is built on process, with examples in our academic work that goes hand-in-hand with our institutional, commercial, mixed-use and residential projects as well as design for civic places. We have completed exemplary projects in collaboration with extraordinary clients, many of whom have the objective to promote a standard of excellence that requires cross-disciplinary collaboration and flexibility for future modification. We strongly believe architecture has a role in the discourse of place-making as well as defining the character of spaces and interactions of the people who use them. Through our collaborative and community engagement approach, MIIM Designs creates design solutions that are not only functional but also deeply resonate with the values, culture, and needs of the communities we serve. This is why we have dedicated our studio to these principles:
SOCIAL ENTERPRISE.
We offer 5% or more employee time to pro-bono services and donate 2% of sales to charitable causes.
ENVIROMENTAL STEWARDSHIP.
We prioritize environmental stewardship by aiming for zero waste and pollution, high energy efficiency, and low impact in our daily operations. As global citizens, we continue to search for sustainable alternatives and avoid using harmful materials in our designs. We are working to measure each project’s embodied and operational carbon to create transparency in our practices within the next decade.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.
We want the community, stakeholders and the owners to be involved with us in the design process. Collaboration amplifies the potential of the projects. This spirit of collaboration runs across our studios and beyond it to the expertise and experience offered by our sophisticated network of trusted specialists.
ECOSYSTEM.
Underlying our approach, embedded in our design, is a systems based approach that responds to a complex and connected chain of processes. Ecosystems drives all aspects of design from technological to ecological, shaping the choice of plant materials to harvest clean air, to renewables that harvest water, food, light and energy. health checks and system checks or seasonal design updates for two or four seasons.
CULTURE.
Traditions, stories, history and culture grounds our ethos as an extension of not only the local, physical grounds of a project but also the ideological grounds of a community, reflected in the programmatic design of spaces and systems. Diversity is embedded in design by engaging culture, and the context it shapes; from the materials of planting palettes to the programmatic of adjacencies.
In the end, when Aristotle coined the term, “the Sum is greater than the parts", what he meant was, being together creates community. Play encourages wonder and imagination; and design is for everyone. This is what we do at MIIM Designs - DESIGNING COMMUNITIES + CREATING CULTURE.
